The road to independence has begun!

Well, it finally happened. I have kept Justin close by my side for 12 years now (on Wednesday it will be 12 years) but now he is venturing out on his own. Just like that - he called me from school and asked if he could walk with his friends to Friendly's after school tomorrow!!

It kind of took me by surprise and after a lot of calls back and forth to the parents of the other kids involved with the proposed visit to Friendly's, we decided that it was a bit too far for them to walk (especially for the first time) and that one of the parents would drop off the kids and another one would take them home. The kids will stay at Friendly's by themselves and order a meal themselves and pay themselves.

I really am not ready for this, but then again I probably never will be so I am going to let him do it. He needs to be independent from me and this is his first step towards that goal.

Afterwards the kids are all coming back here. Then I realized we don't have enough X-box controllers so the kids will bring x-tra ones. I guess we now know at least one thing Justin needs for his birthday.

One thing in life that we can count on is change. Things always change, and this is the beginning of a change. There will be much more to come. For example, the other day, a kid sent Justin a text message. Then he sent another and another. Previously the only thing Justin used his cell phone for was to call me. First, text messages, then lunch out with friends - I wonder what the next new thing will be? I am sure I won't have to wait long to find out.
